Answer: An operating system is the written software code that manages the resources of a computer system. It is also known as the 'OS' of the computer. This software allows computer programmers to interface with the computer resources to provide further computer instructions (commonly called 'programs'). And, the OS, along with these programs, helps the you (the end-user) to tell the computer what you want it to do.
It is the basic foundation of all system software. Your computer's OS performs basic tasks such as controlling memory, prioritizing usage requests, controlling input and output devices (I/O devices), facilitating networking and managing file systems.
Some examples of personal computer operating systems are the copyrighted products of Microsoft - MS-DOS, Windows 2000, XP, & Vista - and Apple's copyrighted product OS X. Server operating systems include Linux, FreeBSD, and Unix.
